Contact Stress Measurement
Takahide SAKAGAMI, Dr. Eng., Associate Professor Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Osaka University
Dr. Sakagami has been using the DeltaTherm for contact stress measurement. The test specimen included an IR transmitting material as one of two contacting materials. IR emission from the contact surface can be measured through the IR transmitting material, and thus thermoelastic stress analysis (TSA) can be applied for measuring the contact stress distribution. Contact stress under a vertical load (45Hz, 10+-5 N), in which a plastic sample is in contact with a flat barium fluoride window was measured. An excellent image of the contact stress distribution on the letters "S" & "P" was obtained by the DeltaTherm, indicating that the present technique is applicable to the visualization and quantitative analysis of the contact stresses on a hidden surface between two machine components.
